Hulda's Heritage

"Jag heter Hulda Nyström."

That's how you say "My name is Hulda Nystrom" in Swedish, which is what I am on my father's side.

My mom says she's "Heinz 57" - English, Welsh
"and a little bit of French Huguenot"

She's English on her father's side and Welsh and French Huguenot
on her mother's side. She thinks there may be some other nationalities on her mother's side, but she doesn't know what they might be.

What others say about Heinz 57:
"My mom used to say ..."
Why does Heinz ketchup say "57 varieties"?

My Swedish culture
(See Checklist & Instructions)

I know the most about the Swedish side of my family, so I will start with that.

There are several reasons why I know more about my father's side of the family: My father had 5 siblings, whom I all knew, as well as their children; I also knew his parents. We spent holidays together and followed some Swedish traditions. Finally, in spite of the fact that my father was the only male in our family, it was a male dominated family.

I know less about my mother's side of the family because she was an only child; because I never knew her mother, as she died before I was born; because her father died, I think, when I was in junior high school; and because according to my mother, she was never very interested in family history.

Some Highlights of Swedish History
Vikings
http://www.luth.se/luth/present/sweden/history/viking_level

800-1050 A D
The Viking Age. The Vikings worshipped the Asa gods such as Oden and Thor.
The origin of the word Thursday comes from the Swedish word Torsdag,
meaning... you guessed it... Thors day. Actually, most of the days of the week
         come from Nordic mythology.
