This year the school is 38 years old. There are many things which it can
be proud of. Apart from its excellent record of academic achievement by
its students in PMR, SPM and STPM, many of its co-curriculum activites
produce outstanding results and nurture many talents in various fields.
Today, SMJK Hua Lian has earned its reputation as an excellent educational
institution in the Larut, Matang and Selama Distrct. |

| But
this does not mean that the school has no problem. Quantity wise, the
school is over-crowded with its far-beyond-optimum population of 3,079
students in 77 classes, 134 teachers and 19 non-teaching staff, thereby
stretching its resources to the limit and diluting its quality. Hence, the
direction of the development of the school from now on should be towards
improving its quality. While continual efforts are being made to increase
and improve its physical facilities to cater for the needs of the
increasing school population, the focus of the school adminitration is on
the major function of the school as an institution of quality education. |

Hence, what actually goes on in the classrooms daily is very important. In
our daily house-keeping, we must ensure that teachers teach and students
learn effectively. This can best be achieved by practising the strategy of
"Management by Walking" by the school administrators. To put
everything in the nutshell, as stated by Ketua Pengarah Pendidikan
Malaysia, Yang Berbahagia Dato' Dr. Abdul Shukor b. Abdullah, let us go
"Back to Basics" because in final analysis, " Teaching and
Learning is the Core Business of the School!" and this is in line
with a principle held dear by the Principal Mr. Quah Chin Eng, that
is,"Quality teaching and learning cannot be compromised!" This
provides the teachers and students of the school a very clear direction. |

| At
the same time, the school is responsible for the character-building of its
students based on our traditional norms and value system. This can be
achieved by actively involving our students in the co-curriculum
activities, especially in games, sports and school societies. |

|
Last but not least, we also have the mission to educate our younger
generation to become IT-literate, to fulfill the national aspirations of
Vision 2020. |

| The
Future... |
| |
|
With the strong support and help from the Board, the PTA, our alumni,
community leaders and well-wishers, SMJK Hua Lian is taking a quantum leap
in IT education by transforming the school into a Smart Learning
Environment. |
| |
| The
years ahead of us are full of challenges. With highly motivated students,
a team of dedicated staff and a supportive Board of Governors and PTA,
SMJK Hua Lian, Taiping will continue to stride forth with confidence, to
ride high and grow from strength to strength in the years to come as we
welcome the next millenium. |

| The
future is calling and we must be ready. Into the New Millennium, we will
turn ripples into tidal waves, and for SMJK Hua Lian, the Best is yet to
come …… ( to be continued because the story of SMJK Hua Lian is a
never ending story of one success after another! ) |
