| Wheels Car Of The Year Award winners |
| The new Wheels Car Of The Year eligibility requirements, effective from the start of the 2003 COTY program:: NEWNESS - Facelifts are frequent. Platform and component-set sharing is increasingly common. Genuinely all-new cars are a rarity. 'New' isn't as simple as it used to be. Here's the Wheels ruling on what truly makes a 'new' car new. To be considered eligible for COTY, a 'new' car must fulfil at least two of these three newness criteria: 1. New purpose and design - Different number of seats or doors from related models, and/or major structural differences. Admits coupe, cabrio, and other variants of an existing model in their own right. Sedans and sedan-based wagons, on the other hand, will continue as always to be considered jointly. 2. New dimensions - Significantly altered wheelbase, tracks, length, width, and height measurements from related models. 3. New technology - Different engine or transmission, or additional drivetrain components, different suspension(s), brakes, steering, or other major mechanical system. SAFETY - A lap-sash seatbelt for the occupant of every seat. VOLUME - Minimum sales of 250 sales in the first 12 full months following launch. Those companies with models selling at an annualised rate that is marginal are required to provide us with written confirmation of their plans to achieve the required numbers The winners since 1963 1963- Renault R8 1964- Morris 1100 1965- Ford Falcon 1966- Ford Falcon 1967- Chrysler Valiant 1968- Holden Monaro 1969- Holden Torana 1970- Renault 12 1971- Chrysler Charger 1972- (none) 1973- Leyland P76 V8 1974- Volkswagen Passat 1975- Holden Gemini 1976- Volkswagen Golf 1977- Honda Accord 1978- Holden VB Commodore 1979- (none) 1980- Mazda 323 1981- Mercedes Benz S-class 1982- Holden Camira 1983- Mazda 626/Ford Telstar 1984- Mitsubishi Nimbus 1985- Mitsubishi Magna 1986- (none) 1987- Honda Prelude 4WS 1988- Holden VN Commodore 1989- Mazda MX-5 1990- Lexus LS400 1991- Honda NSX & Nissan Pulsar 1992- Mazda 626/Ford Telstar 1993- Holden VR Commodore 1994- Subaru Liberty 1995- Honda Odyssey 1996- Mitsubishi Magna 1997- Holden VT Commodore 1998- Subaru Liberty 1999- Mercedes Benz S-class 2000- Subaru Impreza 2001- Holden XC Barina 2002- Ford BA Falcon 2003- Mazda RX-8 |
