MELVIN JONES - Our Founder

On June 7, 1917, Melvin Jones had a dream to create a organization that could work together for the betterment of their individual communities and the world, if possible.

He gathered together several local business clubs, located in the Chicago area.  He proposed his ideas to all those gathered and it was readily acceptable.
HELEN KELLER

In 1925, a young lady from Alabama, Helen Keller contacted the International Association of Lions Clubs and requested a time to speak at their upcoming Convention.

At the International Convention held in Cedar Point, Ohio, in 1925, Helen Keller appealed the all present delegates to become "Knights of the Blind".  The delegation were so impressed with her speech, that this became the main focus for Lions worldwide.

Her one comment really impressed them, when she stated "I am equally deaf as I am blind", "If I had the ability to have one of my senses returned, I would pick hearing, it is easier to see what I am missing than to hear what I am missing"
In 1945, to broaden it's International role, Lions Clubs International helped the United Nations form the Non Government orgrnization sections of the U.N. and continues to serve as consultants.

Each year, the United Nations set aside a special day in February to honor the winner of Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Contest and their family.  The winner is invited to speak to a gathering of the U.N. on what Peace means to him or her.
