INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATIONS OF LIONS CLUBS
LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL
How did it Start?
The Lions Club is the world's largest service organization. In 1917 Melvin Jones created the Lions Club as an effort to combine several local business clubs into one club that could accomplish more. In 1925 Helen Keller appealed to the Lions club delegates for greater service and support to help the blind. They were so impressed by her they voted to focus their efforts to the blind. This became the major driving force behind the Lions club.In October 1975 the International Association of Lions voted to recognize the service of women into Lionism. Up until then they had a 40-year history of being an all male organization. With this change the women would be united under one name, banner, emblem, and constitution.
