| A Moleben, or "Thanksgiving Service" was celebrated on Sunday, September 7th at 9:30 am. This marked the Start of the New School Year. It is a venerable practice observed in all Orthodox countries in the old world and in many American parishes. All students Kindergarten through College, and all Teachers (Church School, Public, Parochial, College, etc.) were invited to participate. Special Prayers were offered and all students and teachers were blessed with Holy Water. Thanks to all who attended! We even had some "extra people" who got blessed by Fr. Sam! Our Church School Program started Sunday, September 14th at 9:15 am. All children in the Parish are still invited to attend. Parents are asked to enroll in the Church Hall at 9:15 am on Sunday. Please tell other parishioners you know with small children to sign up for church school----it's never too late to join. We welcome children from Kindergarten through High School. Don't forget: We start at 9:15 a.m.! |

| IOCC School Kits | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Link to IOCC website | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This year we will be putting together school kits for needy children around the world. Here is an excerpt from the IOCCs website regarding their school-kit project: Can you imagine going to school without a pencil or a notebook? Well, in most of the countries where IOCC works, there are children who don't have even these basic school supplies. Church World Service, a longtime partner of IOCC, makes it possible to send school kits to needy children through the "Gift of the Heart" program. By putting together a "Gift of the Heart" school kit, you can give a less fortunate child the tools needed to do well in school. Church World Service will collect the kits at a warehouse facility, prepare them for shipment and work together with IOCC to make sure these kits reach their destination when needed. Please carefully follow the instructions below: 1. Buy a 12-by-14-inch cloth bag with cloth handles (or a comparable knapsack of these dimensions or larger) and a closure (VELCRO, snap, zipper or button) and fill it with the following items: One pair of blunt scissors One 30-centimeter ruler (12") One pencil sharpener Six new pencils with erasers One large eraser One box of 24 crayons Pads or notebooks of ruled paper, approximately 8-by-11 inches, containing 150-200 sheets of paper Twelve sheets of colored construction paper Drop off your donations in the box in the Narthex area or down in the church hall. We hope to have the Church School Children put it together on Sunday, October 19, so please get your donations in by then. |

| HROC Festival: Children's Carnival |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| We are looking for Youth volunteers for this year's 13th Annual Fall Festival. There will be cool games such as Huggie Toss, Tropical Bean Bag Toss, Bottle Knock-Down and the ever popular Spongebob Tent. We need responsible people to help run the games, as well as entertaining the children. Perhaps you have a special talent making Balloon Animals....or maybe you can juggle (preferably more than two items!)......Care to dress up like a clown? We will also need "gophers", or people who can run errands since the children's area should be supervised at all times. If anyone is interested in helping this year, by either sponsoring a game (come up with a new one, perhaps?) or "working a booth", please let the Festival Committee know. We also welcome feedback: any suggestions, new ideas, etc. |

| Pumpkin Farm & Hayride Fun | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| We are tentatively planning the 2nd Annual Pumpkin Pickin' Hayride at the Mica Farm for the Sunday after the Festival: Sunday, October 19, 2008. Last Year's First Pumpkin Pickin' Hayride Event, held on October 21 of 2007 was a great success!. There were nine children and fifteen adults who participated. The fact that there were almost twice as many adults as children shows that this was an event NOT just for children, but for "the young at heart" too! First, Matushka Kluchko led the children in making scarecrows from old clothes, stuffing them with hay. Then, everyone loaded up on the haywagon (including the scarecrows and Sheba, the farm dog) to take a ride out to the pumpkin patch. A roaring fire was already blazing, thanks to Beth and James Michael Saul. Everyone unloaded and tthen sat around socialize and eat delicious Halushki, Kielbasi, Hoagies (courtesy of the Dudzinskis) and homemade desserts. The children (and some adults) had fun roasting hot dogs and making smores over the fire. After filling our bellies, we then meandered through the Pumpkin Patch, taking care not to step on the vines, because unlike other commercial pumpkin farms, these pumpkins were still growing on the vine. Each person had an opportunity to pick out their own pumpkin and take it home. As we packed up and rode back on the haywagon, we took in the gorgeous sunset and beautiful scenery on the horizon. You couldn't have asked for a more lovely day! Good weather, good food and good friends......what more to be thankful for on such a day? Best of all, it was FREE! Thanks to all who helped and participated. As the saying goes, "Many hands make light work". Hope to see you again this year----especially those who missed it! |
