Hospice and Palliative Nurses' Association

Fort Worth Regional Chapter

Hospice in Great Britain has the sunflower for their icon. We have also chosen the sunflower as the symbol for our local group. Sunflowers focus on sunlight for stamina and strength, thrive in adverse growing conditions, and develop deep roots and strong stalks to withstand the elements. These qualities could also describe a Hospice nurse.

On February 6, 2009, the FDA sent letters to 24 manufacturers of opioid analgesics (both long and short-acting) to let them know that that they would be required to develop a comprehensive Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) plans. According to the FDA, the purpose of the REMS would be to ensure that the benefits of the drugs continue to outweigh the risks (misuse, abuse and accidental overdose).

The REMS process could include a variety requirements for each step of the process -manufacturing, distribution, prescribing, etc. Additional requirements, such as labeling, education, registration, and certification, all add potential restrictions and delays in accessing vital pain medications.

As a current member of HPNA, we recommend you send an email or a short letter to the FDA offering your opinions, comments, and/or recommendations regarding the efforts to develop and implement Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies for opioid medications. (See FDA Announcement below for submission information). The FDA will accept your written or electronically submitted comments until June 30, 2009.
