SEPTEMBER: Under the Microscope - For this lesson we will be taking a detailed look at what
makes Rowling's writing shine. Using excerpts we will examine diction, imagery, and other
figurative language tools to see how Rowling creates her complex characters, her imaginative
worlds, and the lessons Harry learns on his journey.
OCTOBER: Fizzing Weasley's Wacky Wonders - We'll examine the Weasley children using a
pyschological theory known as birth order. Let's see how accurately Rowling depicts this magical
family.
NOVEMBER: Wizards are from Mars, Witches are from Venus - Why is Harry's mentor and
headmaster a male? Why does the Slytherin Quidditch team have no girl players? What role
does gender play when Voldemort chooses his most faithful subjects? We'll examine the gender
boundaries present and the stereotypes and limitations created as a result. We'll learn how the
muggle and magical societies place the sexes in their places.
DECEMBER: A review of writing tools and easy-analysis-essays, the points to cover for quick,
effective analysis. Essay on Order of the Phoenix.
JANUARY: Mid-term Exam - Covering material from Sept. to January.
FEBRUARY: This is the Stuff of Heroes and Villians - A review and deeper analysis of first year's
"Harry, the Archetypal Hero." And what is it about Voldemort that taps into pritimive human fear?
We'll learn how He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is following in the steps all those before him who
have challenged heroes.
MARCH: The Boy Who Could Been the Boy Who Lived - A look at the life and struggles of
Neville. We'll compare his and his grandmother's methods of coping with loss, his right as a
Gryffindor, and his future potential.
APRIL: Behind the Mask - We'll look at the darker, older sides of the wizard world and find their
roots outside the books. The Death-Eaters weren't the first to pull on the masks for night
activities of destructions and the wizard family the Malfoys weren't the first to see the benefits of
bloodlines.
MAY: Battle Hymn - As Harry grows older, his life becomes more complicated. We'll look at his
struggles with other characters and with himself, how different characters perceive these
struggles, and how Harry handles them.
