Chapter 6
A few weeks had passed and Tamara was still seeing Nick but she didn't know that Susan was once again up to her old games. She was in her office when she heard the door creak quietly a crack. She noticed the white piece of material waving in the air and somehow knew it had to be Howie. He unsuredly peeked his head into the office and looked at her. She motioned for him to come in."What can I do for you?"she offered. "Question is, what can I do for you? My brother is all over my case because of what I did that day." "And so he should be." "Tammy. I came here to apologize. You caught me off guard. What was I supposed to say? I don't know I feel. Ever since that morning some weird shit's been going through my mind. Things I never thought about you before. Things I never thought I would think about you. I don't know what's going on but I want us to be friends." "We can be friends Howie but you can't act like a jealous boyfriend every time I start dating someone. I've allowed you that same freedom over the years and not once have I said anything while you were seeing someone how much I thought they were using you and so on and so forth. It has to work both ways." "I'll try a little harder then. Tell me something though?" "What?" "Are you and Nick doing more than just dating?" "What would give you that idea? It's Susan again, am I right?" "Actually Brian told me this one." "And who did he hear it from?" "His wife." "What a trusty bunch of friends we have, don't we?" "So it's not true?" "Even if it was, it's none of your business anyway. Some things we just don't need to share."
"Gotcha. Now that we've cleared that up,are you free for dinner tonight?" "Yes I am as a matter of fact." "Good because John wants to see you again too. It's been ages since he's seen you ." "I know. I've been meaning to get a hold of him." "So we'll see you around seven then?" "Sounds good to me,"she said as Howie left her office passing by Nick as he did. He barreled into her office like a freight train."Who the hell have you been telling we're sleeping together?"he demanded loud enough to hear in the outer regions of the floor she was on. She went and closed her door. "Keep your voice down. I could lose my job." "I hope so. Now answer my question." "Nobody." "Then how is it I found out from somebody else we're getting freaky when I know where I've been cut off?" "Why don't you ask Susan? She's seems to know more about my love life than I do these days. In fact, my love life looks a lot better thanks to Susan these days." "So you haven't said anything to anybody?" "No." "I'm so sorry,"he wrapped his arms around her. "It's OK. Howie asked the same question only I told him if we were, it was none of his business anyway." "So you and he are speaking again?" "We've come to an understanding. I stay out of his love life and vice versa." "I see. So you got plans tonight?" "Actually I do. He, John and I are having dinner but maybe we could get together later." "And do what?" "Oh I don't know. I'll let you decide that one." "So about eleven?" "See you then,"she reached up and kissed him.
Later the same evening she was so engrossed in her conversation that she'd almost forgotten about Nick. Realizing the time, she excused herself as John walked her out to her vehicle."So tell me something Tam, why haven't you and my baby bro' hooked up yet?" "Excuse me?"she fumbled for her keys. "Why do you think I ever introduced you to him in the first place? I've met every single woman he's ever dated and not one of them had all the qualities you do to make him happy. So why is he all of a sudden so depressed with his dating situation?" "Ask him. I've got an early appointment in the morning?" "Tammy." "You know something, I can't help what he's doing so I'm getting on with my life OK? I know I how I feel but I can't make him feel the same." "And dating Nick is gonna make that easier?" "Nick showed interest; he didn't." "I see. I guess if you're happy that's all that matters." "Thank you. I really do have to go now." She raced across town avoiding two speed traps and knocked on his door. He slightly cracked the door for his view."Do you know what time it is?" "I know Nick. I'm sorry. I haven't spent any significant time with those two in ages and well you know how it is." "Enlighten me." "Don't waste my time with your childish games. I was a half an hour late. I can name plenty of times when you've been late in the past month." "I had good reasons,"he opened the door wide. "Well I did too. So if you can see past that ego of yours maybe we could enjoy a little together time." "What ever are you talking about?"he played dumb. "Come in."
