Chapter 7
Two week later Liz and Susan were having lunch at Susan's place. "I can see this is not going to work after all,"she played with her salad.
"What have you got against Tamara anyway Susan?  She's a nice girl.  She's never done anything to you."
"Except steal my boyfriend."
"She never stole Howie and you know it.  You're just upset that they are so close as friends and that pissed you off because the only way you know how to get close to a man is physically."
"Isn't there any other way?  Besides, I have a feeling she's never been intimate with a man in her life anyway.  I don't know what I was thinking to begin with."
"Susan, you are so full of yourself.  Not everybody looks to the outside for beauty.  Sometimes you have to look deeper than the skin.  That's what he likes about Tammy.
I can't remember the last time I spoke to her she's been so busy lately with Nick."
"She's still seeing Nick?"
"According to my last calculations, yes.  Now will you let this rest?"
"I can't."
"Then  you just lost yourself another friend dear,"Liz moved from the table and grabbed her purse off the kitchen counter.
Susan caught up to Liz at the door."Liz?"
"What?"
"Haven't you ever been hurt so bad you just wanna hurt somebody else?"
"Yes but I never have.  That's the difference between you and I.  I hope one day you realize that's not what it takes to get somebody's attention,"she turned and left Susan standing in the doorway stunned.
The same evening,  a group of them had decided to go dancing.  Howie had brought along a new girlfriend Kristin had introduced him to.  Seemed as though things were working out quite well between Nick and Tamara these days.  Almost two months; a record for her to say the least.  She was on the dance floor with Nick when  Howie cut in on them."Hi,"he smiled at her and took her into his arms as the music played.
"Sure your new gal won't get upset over this?"
"She knows our history.  She's cool."
"Good.  Sure Nick won't get upset over this?"
"If he was, he would have already said so."
"Now that everything's clear about that, what can I do for you?"
"Just dance with me, talk to me, be my friend,"his eyes drew her face closer to his.
"Really now?"she mustered up confused by the feelings he was stirring up in her body right now.
"Really ,"he kept her within breathing distance of his lips.
"Didn't we talk about this before?"she attempted to place some distance between them unable to make it possible.
"So we talked about when we were dating someone else,"he remained calm as he melted inside as her breath remained close to his.
"We are dating others,"she offered.
"What would happen if I said I wanted to date you?"he offered not losing an inch between them.
"I don't know."
"Why don't you think about it?"he suggested  wanting to feel her lips soft upon his, the feel of her skin next to his.
"What about friendship?"
"We don't need that anymore."
"We don't?"
"What would everybody think if I kissed you right now then?"
"I don't think we should."
"Because they think it's wrong or because you're afraid?"
"I'm not afraid,"his lips softly brushed hers.
"You know they're watching."
"I know,"lost in the moment forgetting the world around them. His lips brushed hers once again.  He drew the soft flavor of her within his.
The time and place was so wrong but it felt so right.  She couldn't push away the very real fact that he was making every inch of her body tingle.  She felt his fingers tangled in her long golden blonde strands as they were still so consumed by their emotions that they forgot where they were.
It now occured to him that something was very wrong with what they were doing here and now.  He drew away breathless. "God I'm sorry."
"Sorry that you were caught or sorry that you kissed me?"
"Neither."
"Goodbye Howard,"she walked calmly off the dance floor and toward Nick.
"Tam. I'm sorry.  Let me explain,"he tried getting her attention but knew it was useless. The damage was already done.  For both of them.
"I know you're probably pissed and I'd understand but would you at least drive me home?"she inquired of Nick.
"Sure."

Howie lay staring at the ceiling of his bedroom wondering what possessed him to kiss her then and there.  It couldn't be because she challenged him.  He had wanted to do it.  He'd been wanting to kiss her since that morning. He wanted to hold her, touch her and make her feel like she was the only one in the world for him.  He wanted  her more now than ever but he had a feeling he'd screwed things up too much for them to have anything more.

Tamara sunk into the irredescent glimmer of raspberry scented bubbles as she replayed the evening's events.  She'd come with Nick and left with him but the in between had her head reeling.  The way Howie's body felt pressed against hers, the passion.  She was totally confused by it now.  Then Nick.  He understood but he didn't like it.  But what'd you expect?  You are  or I should say were dating him.  Now you have nobody thanks to Howie's little stunt.  God how could they have been so stupid?  Will there ever be a chance for us she looked up toward the heavens in hopes of receiving an answer knowing she wouldn't be getting one anytime soon.
