| Three months had passed and she hadn't seen Nick since that day. Sherl's recent engagement reminded her just truly lonely she was and how she screwed up what might have been the one good thing she could have had in her life. Oh well, it had given her more time to work on her novel. She was fighting Howie tooth and nail just to get the papers signed. She didn't want anything from him other than to just get on with her life and he wasn't making it possible. She knew they were leaving and that would throw yet another roadblock into getting on with both their lives. Maybe that's what was really bothering her. She did want Nick in her life and Howie knew protesting the settlement would keep her from having that happiness. Question is, would Nick want her after the torment she afflicted upon him? Would he even care if she was alive anymore? Sherl hadn't heard anything and she knew that couldn't be good. The holidays had fastly approached. Sherl was wrapped up in last minute details at school before the holiday break and Melissa was finishing up some last minute shopping for Christmas. She had finished up early this particular morning and decided it was now or never. She approached the doorstep she'd felt so comfortable approaching before. What if he didn't want to see her? What if Sherl was right? Come on girl. Knock and just see what happens. Let's just say nothing could have prepared her for the replica of a girl staring her back in the face once the door was open."Can I help you?"the girl inquired. "I'm sorry. I came at a bad time. Would you tell Nick that Missy......stopped.....by,"her words trailed off as he shown his face in the door. An awkward silence fell between the three of them. Missy wasn't sure what to say and there was so much he wished he could say but the presence of another party prevented those words from happening . He finally broke the silence,"Angie, this is a friend of mine Missy. Missy, Angie,"he made the introductions. "Nice to meet you Angie." Angie knew he needed some time and lightly pecked him on the cheek."Don't be too long baby,"She whispered and smacked him playfully on the butt before leaving them alone at the door. "Missy,"he reached for her hand as it was brutally rebuffed. "Just....don't...okay?"she stammered; unable to avoid the inevitable stream of tears threatening to let lose with just the right words. "I told you I wouldn't wait forever." "Then I guess forever just got a lot shorter now didn't it? Merry Christmas!"She stormed to her vehicle and sped off in tears. She finally pulled to the side of the rode to regain her composure and as to not endanger herself and the lives of others. He was everything she ever wanted, but he certainly wasn't worthing killing herself for. Dammit Carter! You knew this was gonna happen. Just let it go for now. Missy's a big girl. She'll learn to adapt. Question is, will you adapt to living without her forever? |
