| Chapter 10 |
| Sherl came in the next morning to find Melissa curled up in Nick's arms on the couch. He was surfing through the endless sea of nothing to watch on a Sunday morning."What's going on?"Sherl whispered as not to wake her. "Give me a second,"he drew her lifeless form up within his arms and carried her into the bedroom. He pulled the sheet over her and lightly kissed her cheek. He quietly closed the door and returned to Sherl. "Sorry I took so long." "It's okay. What's going on?" "Howie showed up here after you left. Right after the pizza guy. I don't what he said but she was pretty shook up about it. She just barely fell asleep." "And you've been here all night with her?" "You sound surprised." "Maybe a little." "Don't worry about it. I'm surprising myself a lot these days." "Can I ask you something?" "What?" "She told me what happened the other day. Could you have stopped her?" "What are you getting at?" "Don't take advantage of her." "I'm the one trying to figure out what the hell's going on here Sherl. If that's the only thing I was after do you think I'd still be here?" "If you're playing it right." "I don't know how you've managed to keep AJ all this time." "I apologize. I'm just watching out for her. Did you know that besides you, Howie's the only man she's ever been intimate with in her entire life. I just don't want her to move too fast too soon. You know what I mean? I care about her." "I do too." "Then slow her down if you really do." "I will. I think I've done all I can for right now. I'll call and see how she's doing later." "Sounds good. Thank you,"she said as she showed him out. The ankle length, form-fitting black rose print dress looked gorgeous on her. Her long blonde tresses were drawn back and sporadically framed her face and her big blue eyes lit up an otherwise darkened arena. The arena was lit only upon the circular stage. The music started and all he could focus on was her. For the first time in six months the small choreography for that stage was changed;for her. It was very obvious to the crowd the change and the girls in the immediate vicinity knew exactly what was going on with the heartfelt expressions coming from Howie more so then he had before. Melissa was practically blushing at being such a center of attention. The next thing he remembered was the dazzling smile awaiting his arrival after the last song of the evening. The most memorable thing abou the entire evening was the most intoxicating lovemaking he'd ever known and holding her all night long. Those words meant nothing anymore. Nothing at all. He'd screwed up big time and he'd be a damn lucky man if he could ever win her back. |
