Notre Dame Cathedral
Notre Dame was begun in 1163 and built in the new Gothic style, its monumental proportions meant to reflect the status of Paris as the capital of the Kingdom of France. It was completed in about 1345.
One of the best views of Notre Dame is from the lovely park behind it, where you can see the church's mass of ornate flying buttresses. Perhaps through divine intervention, the sun came out just as I reached the garden to take some pictures.
Inside, Christine prayed while I took pictures. In the low light, without the benefit of a tripod, they were not too successful. Here is the only presentable picture. (Just in case anyone is interested: all these Paris photos were taken with a 35mm camera loaded with 200 ISO colour negative film. This interior shot was taken with a 50mm lens; all the others were taken with a 21mm lens. The pictures were scanned to a CD and lightly manipulated in Paintshop Pro.)
