Taking a hardcore base sound and grafting it to an Angus-fied arena rock lead guitar edge, XXX Smut truly deliver the goods on this Straight To Hell EP. More powerful sonically than their long out of print full-length Fuck Beer Got Milk, this 7"er is without question the band's best recorded output to date. The attitude is caustic as you'd hope for but it never comes at the expense of great songs.
Side A begins with a rumble in the form of "Straight To Hell." This one boasts a surprisingly subtle injection of wah on the choruses. Next up is "I Want A Vivid Girl." An ode to the porno superstarlets of our day, this hyperboogie blitzkrieg is sure to be a fave amongst fans of bands such as the Dead Kings, Cretin 66, and Nashville Pussy--a claim you could make of this whole disc, in fact.
The B-side doesn't let up for a single second, as evidenced by "Just Kill Me." Here, XXX Smut cash in big with what sounds like a 'cored out take on KISS-slanted cockrock. Putting a tight bow on this package is the beautifully titled "Baby, You Ain't Shit." The most diverse of the bunch from a pacing standpoint, this cut is blastbeat bully on the verses, shifting to a cool midtempo on the choruses.
People deeply into the aforementioned bands and style are absolutely in need of this Straight To Hell EP. So too are devotees of ANTiSEEN, Cocknoose, Black Flag, and the Circle Jerks. XXX Smut have a wide array of influences they're not afraid to let shine through, so there's something here for many different kinds of listeners. Pissed, brutal, but with a good sense of humor, this one's a winner. It's the only XXX Smut release readily available and in print at the moment, so hop on this jewel while the opportunity is in front of you.
