The White Lights--s/t
WorryBird   2001

In an era where sterile, formulaic, "cookie cutter" music rules the attention of the masses, one might be inclined to ask "where did the soul and passion of it all disappear to?" The truth is it never went away, you just have to dig a little deeper to find it in this climate. It's worth the effort to explore, especially when you stumble across a gem like this self-titled CD by The White Lights.

The White Lights feature former members of the Subsonics but this is an entirely different monster. The sound of The White Lights might be best described as a cross between the Compulsive Gamblers or Reigning Sound (I actually scored this CD at a show they played with Reigning Sound) and Chick Habit by April March. This is extremely classy stuff with super sexy vocals and an equally seductive backdrop. The sound is very full, thanks to extended instrumentation--beyond the typical voice/two guitars/bass/drums set-up, The White Lights also make prominent use of organ, violin, pedal steel, and vibrophone.

On top of the great execution,
The White Lights also have superb songwriting going for them. Standout tracks include "From The Gutter", "Nothing In The Past", "Save Your Sons", and the closing track "Collecting The Debris". From beginning to end, this album is overwhelmingly passionate and heartwrenching. This is music that stays with you.

The White Lights are one of the best bands you might not know about. This is a CD you won't be sorry you took the time to hunt down. Check them out live, too, if you can--there's alot going on musically with The White Lights and it's all a joy to take in.
