V/A--What The Punk?! 2: An MVD Sampler
MVD   2004

With the overwhelming amount of great music DVDs coming out these days, making a choice about which ones you absolutely must score can make a person's head spin. Mercifully, the folks over at MVD had the presence of mind to put together some samplers of the releases in their backcatalog. What The Punk 2 is the second voloume of their sampler series and further proves that consumers really have their work cut out for them--there's an incredible amount of quality stuff here to choose from.

What The Punk 2 is a pretty apt title for this compilation. Virtually every style that tends to fall under the "punk" umbrella gets covered here--from classic punk, to rock n' roll, to scum rock, to ska, right on up through the flat-out weird. There are even some clips/trailers for films that don't deal directly with bands or music but which should still appeal to punk fans. It's a well-rounded mix, to say the least.

This said, highlights on
What The Punk 2 will vary from person to person, based on individual stylistic preference. From this particular point of view, standouts include both GG Allin clips, one from the Hated DVD and the other from Live & Pissed. Texas Terri & The Stiff Ones deliver a high octane, rocking performance, taken from the superb Badsville DVD, and there's more of the same in the Peechees clip off Songs For Cassavetes. Regardless of individual tastes, everyone should find a lot to like in vintage clips of the Germs and Weirdos, taken from Rage-20 Years of Punk Rock, as well as the Dead Kennedy's perfomance of "Hyperactive Child" off the In God We Trust, Inc: The Lost Tapes DVD. Again, from the contemporary to the classic, What The Punk 2 has you covered.

With
What The Punk 2, MVD have offered a little bit more power and knowledge to the consumer. While it won't necessarily make your choices any easier, at least you won't be going in blind on your purchases. Plus, if you can't afford it all, at least you can have a sweet and substantial taste from the whole shebang. A fun, valuable, and affordable overview that's worth picking up.
