Wet Labia--5 track CDr
self-released   2003

Sometimes, you hear a lot of hype about a band only to be let down once the sound finally hits your ears. This is not one of those times. With this five track piece of sonic steel wool, Wet Labia have kicked things off for listeners in grand style.

Soundwise,
Wet Labia could be described as a non-grunge, art-damaged version of Babes In Toyland. Like the Babes, Wet Labia have a jagged quirkiness to what they do. At the same time, this band also seems to echo a vibe similar to the more abrasive end of Alicja-fronted Lost Sounds output. In fact, upon first listen to this disc, one would almost swear Alicja was on vocals here, though she isn't. Ultimately, Wet Labia do in fact manage to carve out their own identity while wearing their influences proudly, as the best of bands typically do.

As for the songwriting, this is extremely consistent material which flows in and out of itself very fluidly. This is so much the case, the first three songs almost seem to morph into one monsterous composition. On the thrid song,
"Gone Away," Wet Labia's angular leanings really shine through, cultivating a feel akin to the best of Sonic Youth's early material.

This little five track blur of a CDr is one exciting and addictive outing, for sure. It gets better and better with every listen--new reasons to dig it coming to light on each subsequent spin. If you like any of the aforementioned bands, or the
Free Kitten albums, you will lose your mind over this stuff. All that said, it really only takes one listen to realize, when you're walking this disc over to the player, you're in a great place with Wet Labia on your fingertips.
