Vincent Price's Orphan Powered Death Machine/Clancy 6--split 7"
McCarthyism   2003

Once is a coincidence, twice is a trend. So goes it for McCarthyism Records. Their first release, the awesome Carrion 7", was one of the best musical surprises in quite awhile. The same could be said of this second McCarthyism release, a split 7" from Vincent Price's Orphan Powered Death Machine and Clancy 6. You may not have heard either band before but, after spinning this disc, you'll almost certainly be craving more from both outfits.

The split kicks off in grand fashion with three tracks from
Vincent Price's Orphan Powered Death Machine. This band is very hard to pin down, genre-wise, because what they do is such an incredible amalgam of many styles--kind of like grind, hardcore, black metal, and death metal, all fused with the angularity of Fugazi. There is an awful lot going on in these three short blasts, with the first track, "ask copernicus about pushing limits," being the standout. This particular song is the most dynamic cut on the entire split and captures clearest what this band is all about. It even contains a section with some massive sounding palm-muted riffage which borders on doomy.

Next up is
Clancy 6. They compliment Vincent Price's Orphan Powered Death Machine well but are more of a straight-up angular hardcore/grind proposition. Their three tracks flow together so well, it all becomes like one massive , brutal song. You would be hard pressed to find a band who could give it to you with more ferocity.

Ultimately, though there is certainly a slight stylistic difference between
Vincent Price's Orphan Powered Death Machine and Clancy 6, the pairing succeeds largely because both bands are bonded by the blastbeat. The only possible complaint one could have after listening to this split is desire for more immediately. Well, look for McCarthyism to hit the trifecta with the forthcoming 7" from Wino's (Obsessed/Saint Vitus/Spirit Caravan/Place Of Skulls) new band, Hidden Hand. As for the present, this is superb stuff from two killer bands. Bravo.
