The Young Playthings--"So Into Sixty" + 1
Dionysus   2005

With a farfisa driven attack that melds equal parts power pop, vintage sixties garage rock, and bubblegum, the Young Playthings serve up a very worthwhile listen on this new 7" of theirs. The production here is raw and lo-fi but the performances are far from sloppy. What results is a platter that has a bit for everyone, without stretching the songs too thin. It's an impressively concocted alchemy.

Side-A sees the
Young Playthings at their rollicking best on the handclap accentuated twister "So Into Sixty." Structurally, this song is pretty straightforward, though the band manage to work in a bridge which thankfully doesn't disrupt momentum. Rocking and paced relentlessly upbeat, this one's a winner.

The B-side
"Lies" comes off a bit more dynamic that its predecessor. The opening guitar jangle gives way to midtempoed rocking. A break near midsong mixes up the sense of pacing nicely without stalling things out. Ultimately, this contemplative tune serves as the perfect companion piece to the first half of the disc.

If you're expecting anal to the point of cartoonish sixties idol worship from the
Young Playthings, you're way off. While there is some vintage shading to these proceedings, there's much more going on here than meets the eye. Fans of the Pandoras and Tina & The Total Babes take note.
