Bootleg Bill--Treasure Trove Of Trash
Scarey Records   2001

Sometimes, the legend of certain underground music doesn't match up with reality. When it actually does, you wind up kicking yourself for having not consumed the goods sooner. Bootleg Bill is one of those folks who do live up to their legend. Treasure Trove Of Trash collects rarities and outtakes from throughout his years of recording. It rules.

The best comparison to what
Bootleg Bill pumps out would be the Mentors, mainly due to the El Duce-esque vocals he delivers. The main difference lies in musical competency--this is not sloppy stuff. The production is generally strong throughout the disc, too--not much lo-fi going on with Treasure Trove Of Trash. The real highlight of it all is Bill's guitar playing--if not for the vocal style and beyond un-PC lyrics, this guy would be hugely popular. Somehow, that fact makes what's going on during this listen even more satisfying, though.

Bootleg Bill also has it all over the competition in terms of songwriting. The average scum punk band would never even think about or be able to pull off arrangements as complex, relatively speaking, as the ones this guy does. Standouts include, thanks to its screaming lead work, "Join The Hate Club," "Shin Kicker," for its rocked out boogie, and "Gorilla Crotch," both for its daring venture into ballad territory and hilarious lyrics about poor undercarriage grooming. However, the best of all on Treasure Trove Of Trash is "All Tore Down." This one is similar in vibe and structure to GG Allin's classic "Bite It You Scum," with a killer mid-tempo riff that just won't quit.

Bootleg Bill, lyrically, stays true to the motto "live to offend." As such, Treasure Trove Of Trash is not for the overly delicate, sensitive, or politically correct--it isn't intended to be. This disc is for fans of the aforementioned acts as well as most of the Confederacy of Scum bands. You will not find this style of music done any better than it is here. A real revelation.
