Valume Nob--The Most High
Crash Music   2004

Coming from a good musical pedigree can be wildly beneficial for a new band. Take Valume Nob, for example. Comprised of some serious New Orleans sludge heavyweights, these guys have delivered the goods as expected on The Most High. Still, this EP might not be just exactly what you were expecting.

Featuring alumni from
Crowbar, Down, and Graveyard Rodeo, the fact Valume Nob operate somewhere between sludge doom and hardcore punk will come as surprise to no one. What might be a bit shocking is just how pointed The Most High is towards traditional hardcore. If you want it slow and low this definitely has moments for you, but more often than not it's an irked frenzy being unleashed. From either perspective, this is damn good stuff.

With only four studio songs and a pair of unlisted live assaults,
The Most High is more or less just trying to give you a taste of what Valume Nob are capable of. On "Together As One," an unexpected High On Fire vibe surfaces, making this the obvious choice for doomers out there. "Becoming A Man" wins the studio award for being most traditionally hardcore, while "Pleasant Memories" and "Boots" each incorporate both halves of the band's sound to maximum effect. A pair of live tracks from a show in Houston affirm that onstage Valume Nob tend to favor their punk roots a bit more, as well. Both these efforts are incendiary, sure to whip all listeners into a red-faced fit.

For fans of any the associated bands,
The Most High looks to be an undoubted winner. Folks into the traditional hardcore of acts like Fear and Limecell are also advized to take a chance on this disc. Valume Nob: bringing metalheads and punks together in perfect harmony. It's a brutalful thing.
