Supersuckers--Live In Anaheim
MVD/Mid-Fi   2004

For well over a decade and a half, the Supersuckers have flown the flag for the evil powers of rock n' roll higher than most. At the same time, they've probably done more than any other band to further the proliferation of country music amongst the throngs of jaded, scenesterish rockers and punkers out there. So, it's a long overdue treat to finally have an official visual document of their onstage prowess in this Live In Anaheim DVD. Whether you prefer your Supersuckers raw and electric or twangified to the max, this package has you covered.

First, the bad news for diehards--
Dancing Eagle is out on drums. The flip of that is the fact Mike Murderburger does such a good job pounding the tubs in his place, the Supersuckers wind up not losing a stitch of their power. The setlist is pretty solid, with a good mix of old and new tracks. The stylistic focus of Live In Anaheim's video portion is the rocked out half of the Supersuckers style, with blistering takes on "Rock Your Ass," "The Evil Powers of Rock-N-Roll," and "I Want The Drugs" sure not to disappoint. There are a lot of color treatments and other visual effects applied to this footage, so it has more of a film-like feel than an attempt to capture the true essence of being at a Supersuckers live show. Still, any way you look at it, you will be rocked by this video.

Also, no need to fret if you were craving clips of the
Supersuckers in country mode. The main program of Live In Anaheim boasts interspersed footage of one such set, featuring takes on "Barricade," "One Cigarrette Away," as well as the unlisted "Must've Been High." Plus, the bonus section has a couple of shots from an Eddie Spaghetti acoustic in-store solo set from Amoeba Records in San Francisco. If the video bits don't satisfy your jones for Supersuckers country, you can look forward to the full-length bonus audio CD of the boys shitkickin' it live in San Diego. Highlights from that disc include twanged out takes of rockers such as "Creepy Jackalope Eye" and "Pretty Fucked Up."

All told,
Live In Anaheim is a package that should thrill old and new fans alike. As jammed pack as it is with extras, the fact you'll be getting a great value can't be disputed. A little more of that patented Supersuckers smart ass/hilarious banter between songs would be nice, but the riotous Eddie Spaghetti survey in the bonus section helps make up for that to a great degree. If all of this doesn't have you convinced this is a manditory score, the hidden video track will--that surprise won't be ruined here; just know it's worth the entire cost of this set on its own. Still keepin' it evil after all these years, bee-otch-iz. Hooray.
