South Filthy--"Soul Of A Man" + 1
Wrecked Em   2003

If the You Can Name It Yo' Mammy...album from "supergroup" South Filthy left you jonesin' for more (and it better be one damn resounding "uh huh" to that), rest easy---your new fix has arrived. On this new 7", featuring a killer pair of covers, South Filthy bring you more of the laid-back blues and country you'd expect from them. As usual, it's the no-brainer, out-of-the-park, grand-slam these guys always come up with--front to back.

First up is the
Blind Willie Johnson song, "Soul Of A Man." This slow stomp of a blues tune seems tailor-made for the vibe South Filthy put out. Jeffrey Evans' guitar drives the whole thing, with Walter Daniels laying down some gritty vocals as well as some tasteful injections from the 'ole harp. Jack Yarber puts some keyboard on this cut that serves to bolster even further the determined plodding from South Filthy's rhythm section, Blind Lary Warner and Mike Buck. In a nutshell, it's hard to get better than this.

Predictably, the flip is just as great, though. On
"Speed Traps, Weight Stations, & Detour Signs," South Filthy pick up the tempo a bit without sacrificing any of the friendly energy. The guitar on this cut is nice and twangy, with moments of cool "chicken pickin'" action. This track is also quite telling of South Filthy's respect for "the song"--with Walter Daniels around, it could be quite tempting to lay crazy harmonica parts all over everything, yet there's no harpin' on this song, period.

At the end of the day, this is the revenant romp you'd expect from
South Filthy. There could be only one complaint--needing more of it, straightaway. Hopefully, these great musicians will bless us with another full-length release, soon. It could definitely be said South Filthy are masters of leaving their audience wanting more. Still, for the here and now, this is some much welcomed output.
