V/A--Sleazegrinder presents: Cock 'n' Roll
Sleazegrinder   2003

Compilations are a tricky proposition. The most subtle factors can make what would've been a great comp into a merely acceptable collection, or even a worthless, steaming pile. Thankfully, on Sleazegrinder presents: Cock 'n' Roll, there's more cream than crap.

If you've read any of the
Sleazegrinder's columns in various magazines, you should have a pretty good idea of what you're going to get here. For the most part, Cock 'n' Roll is comprised of straightforward punk 'n' roll. That said, there is a bit of "stoner rock" mixed in, as well as a wee smidge of pure rock 'n' roll. All the bands compliment eachother well, though, and a good job was done mixing in some bigger names with the unknowns.

As jammed-pack as this collection is (26 tracks in just over 73 minutes), it's amazing there are only a few instances where the songwriting is less than stellar. In fact, of the punk 'n' roll this comp has to offer, it's pointless trying to pinpoint a highlight--there's simply too much killer stuff. That said,
Joker Five Speed's "Jet Set City" does stand out from the pack, thanks to its unique and strangely melodic chorus. Outside of the punk 'n' roll, things here are much easier to pinpoint. Bona Roba's "In The Cut" does a good job delivering the Stones-y/Thunders-esque swagger we all love, while the Erotics echo the glam of Faster Pussycat on "Space Age Mafia." The best of Cock 'n' Roll's female-fronted output comes from Sugabomb with their take-no-prisoners "Speed Thrill." Rickshaw holds the crown here in terms of "stoner rock" with "Temple Of Your Choice," which is actually the highlight of the entire collection.

If you dig any of the aforementioned styles, especially punk 'n' roll,
Cock 'n' Roll is definitely for you. This comp proves to be a thoroughly fun and rocking listen (as well as a sometimes funny one). Plus, there are lots of pretty naked ladies in the booklet. Bonus!
