Qelectronics (Quintron)--Drum Buddy Demonstration Record Vol. 1
Rhinestone Records/Skin Graft Records   2001

To experience the work of genius is a rare treasure. When you are fortunate enough to encounter it, the gift should be cherished. Drum Buddy Demonstartion Record Vol. 1 from Qelectronics (Quintron) is one of those rare, wonderful glimpses into genius.

Quintron's invention, the Drum Buddy, is a five oscillator, light-activated, drum machine. However, that description can't even help you imagine the way this thing sounds. A casual listen might lead you to say that it sounds like some sort of multi-dimensional theremin, but that wouldn't even do the Drum Buddy justice. There is no way to describe the way it sounds other than to say that nothing else sounds like the Drum Buddy. It is truly amazing.

That inability to describe the
Drum Buddy's sound is one of the things that makes Drum Buddy Demonstration Record Vol.1 such a fascinating and essential listen. This record is like an audio tour guide to Quintron's phenomenal invention. It takes you step-by-step through each facet of the Drum Buddy--from the individual sounds you can create, to the way those sounds blend, right up through how it all can function within the framework of a song. It's practically unbelieveable.

Perhaps, though, the most unbelieveable thing about this album is just how
listenable it is. For the most part, Drum Buddy Demonstration Record Vol.1 is made up of short, instrumental type tracks. However, the grooves and sounds the Drum Buddy creates are so fresh and innovative that the listen never fails to be entertaining.

Again, the
Drum Buddy and this album are truly works of genius. All told, this is another in a long string of triumphs for Quintron--it's almost worth it just for the great, well written liner notes. This is the future of music and the future is now.
