Oblivians--On The Go
Goner   2003

As if the Oblivians getting back together for a reunion show this past Halloween wasn't enough to just about kill you from glee, imagine walking up to the merch stand and discovering a new Oblivians record had been pressed for the occasion. Okay, not really a new record. On The Go is a limited edition vinyl pressing of the band's first demo. For anyone who knows what these guys are all about, it goes without saying this is one serious must-have platter.

If you
ain't hip to arguably the greatest band of all time, let's clue you in. The Oblivians do the raw-assed, spawn of Stooges styled punk rock n' roll better than anybody ever has or will. This music has never been derivative. On the contrary, the Oblivians always blended their influences into a distinct voice--one many others have tried to cop since, but it all falls short of the genuine article. Diehards and newbies alike should note that as sick and brutal as the Oblivians official albums are, On The Go is even a little bit more so. This is thanks in large part to there being absolutely no production whatsoever--this is just one great big whallop up side your head. Glorious, it is.

On The Go offers demo versions of several Oblivians classics, such as "Blew My Cool" and "Never Change." These renditions, while not as fleshed out as what made the albums, contain all the power and energy that make these guys the best, to this day. That said, the real treat of this disc is the trio of tracks that didn't make any of the albums, "You Made Me Blue," "Nail Driver," and "Arabian Interlude." All three of these cuts possess a sinister swagger that just won't stop. It's almost more than a heart can take.

When the
Oblivians took the stage on Halloween, they proved beyond a shadow of a doubt they were still the best. On The Go illustrates these guys were the best right from their inception. As stated earlier, this is a limited edition (of 600), so you best get on the ball. If you ain't got, or don't want, this in your stocking, you're something way worse than a lump of coal.
