Obsessed--Live At The Wax Museum
Doom Records

Last year, when the first
Obsessed album was reissued, the bonus live tracks provided the listener with a revelation about how truly great this band was. On that show from 2/28/84, the Obsessed played tight to the point of perfection a set which included songs that wouldn't see the light of day on album for another ten years. With the Obsessed Live At The Wax Museum (7/3/82), those revelations run a little deeper.

Like the bonus tracks on the reissue, this set includes tracks that didn't see official release until '94's
The Church Within and, like that performance from '84, the Obsessed play each song in dumbfoundingly tight fashion. Since Wino is one of the greatest metal songwriters of all time, and hands down the best lyricist ever, it's pointless to try and say which song is best. The most appropriate way to provide a microcosm of this album's worth and greatness is to say that in "Touch Of Everything," when Wino sings "livin' day to day gets downright obscene," you still feel like--no, know--that you are listening to/in the presence of truth and greatness.

The other amazing thing about this album, like the reissued stuff, is Wino's ability to pull off his trademark decapitating guitar solos flawlessly in a live setting. If this guy missed a note the whole album, I sure didn't hear it. That's just one of the many reasons why he's absolutely the greatest of all time.

It's obvious listening to
Live At The Wax Museum why the Obsessed's influence has lasted to this day--they were the best. All these years later, you still feel like you're listening to a group of guys who are playing music for all the right reasons. Thank God we have documents like this so we can still learn from and cherish that example today.
