| Montany--New Born Day SPV/Limb 2002 Here in the United States, old school technical metal fell out of public consciousness years ago and onto hard times. Fortunately, for fans of that style, the music has continued to flourish in Europe. Stateside fans of the genre will no doubt find Montany's New Born Day a welcome breath of fresh air. Montany's sound is best described as progressive power metal. They fall somewhere in between Helloween and Queensryche, in terms of style. Musically, there is an emphasis on the Helloween aspect of their sound, though--lots of fast guitar runs, driving double-bass drums, and high range vocals with lots of harmony backing on the choruses. The progressive element of their sound comes through best when they slow things down a bit. Songs like "Back From The Sky" may be full-on pure power metal, but tracks like "Here In The Light" possess a sophistication which is inherently progressive. Lyrically, the imagery is also very much in the prog realm with lots of emphasis on aliens, pyramids, and dreams. Montany even manage to slow things down enough on the title track to come off as slightly doomy. Combined with the progressive and power metal elements of Montany's sound, it makes for a compelling, strangely textured track. All told, New Born Day is a really solid slab of epic technical metal. It should definitely appeal to fans of either of the aforementioned bands whose influence shows in Montany's sound. This may be an import but, if you crave this style of metal, it could be worth tracking down. Get more info on this CD directly from LIMB |
