Mouserocket--"Missing Teeth" + 2
Wrecked Em   2003

Brothers and sisters, can I get an "it's about friggin' time?" In case you didn't know, for the last little while, Mouserocket have been self-releasing some of the best, most compelling, infectuous, original sounding music ever crafted. These homemade editions erased doubt for anyone within earshot as to whether or not more people needed to hear the band. Thanks to this new Mouserocket 7", hopefully, that inexcusable obscurity is on its way to being a thing of the past.

If you missed out on the absolutely flawless
Water Recordings CDr, this 7" will offer a measure of redemption. What's going on here are three tracks, slightly remixed, off that disc. The A-side kicks off in the best way imaginable with "Missing Teeth," one of Mouserocket's best songs. Perhaps the thing that makes this song such a complete and utter triumph is the fact it is extremely layered yet, that it is essentially a pop song, is always respected--this is to say that the layering never goes overboard; the complexities never become masturbatory. When all the parts gradually fall away or fade down towards the end of the song, leaving the cello as primary voice, the chill factor shoots through the roof. If those goosebumps don't clue you to the fact your ears are in the presence of greatness, God help you.

If all that wasn't enough, you get two more killers on the B-side. First up is another great
Mouserocket original, "Flash & Burn." While not as epic in feel as "Missing Teeth," the dreaminess quotient is boosted thanks to some lovely falsetto vocals from Alicja on the chorus sections. After that, you get a superb cover of "Alone Again Or." This was a great cover choice for the band as the song really does fit Mouserocket's unique quirkiness to a tee, making this rendition come off as quite revenant.

While it is a
great relief that some of this material has finally seen official release, it should also be said this is not enough. There's definitely more brilliant stuff where this came from and it all needs to see the light of day--as quickly as possible. For the time being, if your music collection is sans Mouserocket, this record will be a must-have. If you're already hip to the music of this incredible outfit, you shouldn't need to read this to know it's just as essential for you, as well.
