The Midnight Evils--Straight Til Morning
Estrus   2003

Although there tends to be slight variance from group to group, the amount of AC/DC inspired bands operating today is suffocating. The best of these bands are able to survive and thrive, though the majority just serve to clog up oblivion. Thankfully, the Midnight Evils fall into the more desirable column of that equation. Their new album, Straight Til Morning, proves this band is too good to be casually discarded.

The best way to sum up the
Midnight Evils sound would be to say it's the modern garage rock n' roll approximation of Bon Scott-era AC/DC. Not surprisingly, as a result of this, Straight Til Morning should appeal to fans of other similarly minded outfits, such as Nashville Pussy, the Quadrajets, and the Hellacopters. It isn't reinventing the wheel but this music is fun as hell and rocks like a monster.

Straight Til Morning fares well in that the songwriting creates a consistent wall of power. That said, there are a couple numbers which do stand out in the pack. First, "Dirt Demon," due to its parallel in vibe and structure to the classic "Baby, Please Don't Go." Also, "RD-400" sets itself apart thanks to its reved up tempo, cultivating a bit of a Zeke-like feel. Top to bottom, it's all good.

Fans of any the aforementioned bands will definitely want to pick up
Straight Til Morning. If you aren't a fan of this style, the Midnight Evils probably won't change your mind, but those simply burned out on it would do good to give this slab a chance, as it is quality stuff. A solid effort, to be sure.
