Jeffrey Novak's One Man Band--"Stranded" + 3
Yakisakana Records   2005

All early indications are pointing towards 2005 being Jeffrey Novak's year. With a pair of new 7" releases already out (including this on on Yakisakana Records) and more on the way, it looks like the world's going to be blessed with a seemingly neverending stream of his raw and mean one man band stylings. Good--with each subsequent offering, Jeffrey's stomp, strum, and scream becomes more and more convincing; this record is no exception.

The first song on this slab,
"Stranded," sees Jeffrey bludgeoning listeners like a snotted and bratted up Bo Diddley. This one will get the crowd clapping their hands and stomping their feet, but they'll have to swallow a healthy dose of this guy's venom if they want to rejoice. Bringing up the rear on side-A is the twistin' "Ain't Got A Thing," distinguished in part by its nice stop-start section.

That stop-start structure pops up again on the flipside opening
"Junkyard Blues." Instead of don't-blink-or-you'll-miss-it flash, you get a more relaxed strutting plod, here. Wrapping things up on the most badass note imaginable is the punked midtempo snarl of "I Got Eyes For You." On this cut, Novak thrashes like he's in the middle of some psychic mind meld with Billy Childish, Headcoats and Mighty Caesar-isms abounding.

Yes, 2005 does indeed look bright for
Jeffrey Novak. An increased sense of sonic clarity, along with the warmth of the vinyl medium, has this guy sounding like a million bucks--it's a thrill to take in. Hasil Adkins and King Louie fans, you know the drill. Keep these floodgates wide open. You really need to get down with this stuff if you haven't already.
