Jeffrey Novak's One Man Band--"Down" + 3
A Fistful Of Records   2005

Hot on the heels of last year's two extraordinary CDr releases, Jungle Beat Stomp and To Hell In A Hand Basket, Jeffrey Novak is kicking off 2005 with his first ever vinyl release via A Fistful Of Records. Not only is this 7" a long overdue treat, it also completely delivers on the promise contained in those self-released efforts. Jeffrey Novak isn't just the best thing to happen to the one man band artform in ages, this stuff is the most refreshing recent entry into the world of raunchy rock n' roll, as a whole.

The A-side sets a brutal tone with its opener
"Down." More than any other song on this slab, the spectre of the Oblivians looms largest here--a very Soul Food feeling vibe coming off the grooves. This is followed by "Don't Wanna Live Alone" which shines for its squealing, shrill lead section.

Side B explodes out of the speakers with
"Get Out." This particular heaving and hoing neanderthal stomp is the sonic equivalent of sawing down a big ole tree while blind drunk on moonshine that's just a bit "off"--the unrelenting crash cymbal swirling like kicked up sawdust. Closing the platter is "Rockin' Horse" (not to be confused with Jungle Beat Stomp's "She Rides A Rockin' Horse")--a cool twister on the verses, breaking down into noisy tantrum on the choruses.

It goes without saying fans of like-minded one man banders such as
Hasil Adkins and King Louie should eat this 7" right up. Really, for anyone who likes their rock n' roll sick and raw, this disc will be sweet as candy. There are legions of folks out there trying to glean some sense of authenticity in what they do musically. The difference between those people and Jeffrey Novak is he doesn't have to try. Make no mistake--this guy is the real deal and this 7" backs up that assertion nicely. Completely without flaw.
