V/A--I Am Vengeance (soundtrack)
MeteorCity   2001

With
Welcome To MeteorCity, MeteorCity Records set the standard by which all other "various artists" compilations in the world of doom and groove would be judged. After such a groundbreaking success, is it possible to ever come up with a suitable follow-up? The answer is "yes," and it comes in the form of I Am Vengeance, a soundtrack to Richard R. Anasky's film of the same name.

The first thing evident after a listen or two is that this isn't a typical soundtrack. While many such compilations are seemingly comprised of songs that weren't fit to make a band's "official" album, it's obvious that the songs on
I Am Vengeance were made, for the most part, with the movie specifically in mind. The result is an album packed with top-notch material that flows more like a concept album than a mere soundtrack.

The amazing thing is that out of the sixteen songs on this CD, there isn't a single stinker in the bunch. Of course, bands like
Lowrider, sHEAVY, and Las Cruces deliver the goods, as always. However, the real treat of I Am Vengeance is the music of Dan Fondelius, represented here in three incarnations--Count Raven, Doomsday Gouvernment, and just as Dan Fondelius. He performs on five of the sixteen songs and his material is sure to thrill and delight all fans of pure doom and spacey psychedelia.

Yes,
MeteorCity has come through, yet again, with another absolutely essential slab of downtuned heaviness. God bless 'em. Look for a second volume to this soundtrack coming soon from Game Two Records. Also, if you're able to, support a fellow doom lover and check out the film I Am Vengeance.
