Hellstomper--"Trouble" + 1
Casual Records   2005

Yeah, there may have been some controversy surrounding whether or not this 7" would ever find its way into the hands of Hellstomper and their fans, but it sure as hell was worth the wait. Giving a taste of the demo sessions for their landmark final album Fine...Forget It, as well as a sweet little cover, this platter proves a nice gem for the faithful. As with all of Hellstomper's output, it's certainly worth hunting down.

First up on this single sided record is a demo take of
"Trouble." In this form, the tune comes off a bit rawer and more organic sounding than what made Fine...Forget It, but the undeniable swagger is still there in spades. Granted, this take is slightly less tight than that final cut, but only slightly--when played back to back with the album version, there's absolutely no lag in tempo, a true testament to the rock solid rhythm sectioning of drummer Matt Reynolds and bassist Ben Crawford.

Closing things out is a cover of
Bruce Springsteen's "Open All Night," taken from his Nebraska album. Needless to say, Hellstomper's boogie-minded approach makes this rocker a fitting choice for interpretation. Alan King's vocals here have a bit of slapback on them, almost making it sound like he's delivering things in a rockabilly hiccup. Very cool stuff.

If you're already a
Hellstomper fan, you know you need this disc. Still, this is one of those outings a newbie would be just as likely to go insane over as a diehard. These guys were a fantastic band and they really went out on top with that last full-length. Don't have a clue? This slab will key you in real quick. The boys dedicated this one to a fallen friend and you just know he's gotta be proud as punch of 'em, wherever he is.
