Harpoontang--I Gotta Bang Her / The Day After You
Tequila Dave Productions   2002 / 2003

These days, in the world of music, it seems like there are a plague of people, devoid of humor, trying desperately to feign coolness through seriousness, only making themselves look more lame. Harpoontang must be keenly aware of this pitfall because there isn't a stitch of uptightness in anything they do. On these two albums, I Gotta Bang Her and The Day After You, Harpoontang ascribe to the theory that humor reigns above all else.

Stylistically,
Harpoontang play the most straightforward blues-based hard rock imaginable. There isn't much to it but these guys certainly do it well. This music is proficiently played, with Tequila Dave's bluesy howl presiding over everything. It's a fun ride, even though it all seems to run on the same speed and, sometimes, together.

As previously stated, the thing that really makes
Harpoontang stick out amongst the crowd is the sense of humor they bring to their songs. If you're looking for poetry in your lyrics, it ain't here. Instead, you get verses and choruses so juvenile, they could've been written by an eighth grader--it's all fun and funny as hell. I Gotta Bang Her contains such classically titled tracks as "Do-able Mommies" and "You're Pretty Sick For A Mother Of Two." All told, the best songs are actually on Harpoontang's latest, The Day After You. Infectuous standouts include the title track, "Pushing 38," and especially the album opening "I Wanna Fuck You, You Wanna Fuck Me."

For bands like this, the ultimate goal of an album is to make listeners want to check out the live show. In that regard,
I Gotta Bang Her and The Day After You are successful--these guys must be a riotous party onstage. The press packet for these discs included recipes from Tequila Dave's upcoming cookbook (?!) and even they were sprinkled with golden low brow comedy. Based on that righteous sense of humor alone, Harpoontang are worth checking out. Maybe for fans of Raging Slab and Nashville Pussy. Definitely for fans of general toilet humor.
