GG Allin & The Murder Junkies--Raw, Brutal, Rough & Bloody: Best of 1991 Live
MVD   2004

After GG Allin was released from prison in 1991, he was a man on a mission to rock. At least, that's what Raw, Brutal, Rough & Bloody would cause one to surmise. Containing three entire live performances from that same year, this is the most blistering live footage compiled of GG yet--in every way such video footage could be blistering.

For those who love the shock factor of
GG Allin performances, Raw, Brutal, Rough & Bloody definitely has you covered. However, while there are some golden gross out moments over the course of these three shows, this material mainly stands out for its violence level. GG bleeds more over the course of this DVD than most people probably do in a lifetime. All three of these shows are superb, in terms of spectacle. The energy level throughout is amazing--like GG went out every night with something to prove and a determination that made it all pan out.

This said, the thing that really makes
Raw, Brutal, Rough & Bloody so great is that, better than any other GG DVD on the market, it gives focus to the best and most undervalued part of what he did--the music. There are no "two songs, then the cops shut the show down" performances on this disc. Instead, you get three shows, each with stacked setlists. The first two shows, from San Diego and Chicago, kill--seething punk rock, all the way. By the time of the third and final show in Atlanta, Chrome Cranks badass William Weber was onboard in the guitar slot, turning the Murder Junkies into a world crushing juggernaut. There is a slight contrast in terms of power between the two lineups featured, but it's all incredible to lay ears on.

Really,
Raw, Brutal, Rough & Bloody may be the most complete GG Allin DVD available. This disc gives you a healthy taste of everything that has made the man one of the most notorious and enduring figures in punk rock history. Add a bonus interview with GG's mom (?!) and you've got a virtually perfect winner. Not for the squeamish, but you should know that already.
