GG Allin & The Murder Junkies--Hated
MVD   1999

GG Allin is perhaps the most infamous punk rock legend of all time. Remembered most for his over the top live performances, this man became the embodiment of all anger and hatred, onstage. To this day, everyone under the sun seems to have a take on GG's importance and the meaning of everything he left behind after his death. Hated is a fascinating documentary that tries to make sense of it all, through a series of interviews with GG's allies, enemies, and the man himself.

In terms of the shock value tied to
GG's legacy, Hated contains enough footage to make it clear to all doubters that the stories are true. There are clips of GG in action performing and taking parts in acts so vile, decorum won't permit repeating them here. Still, as gross as much of it is, it's just as compelling a view. Equally as interesting are the opinions expressed by various people involved in GG's life throughout the years--from fans, to both loyal and disgruntled ex-bandmembers, to highschool friends and teachers, as well as family. Was GG a messiah, a fraud, a guy who never stood a chance in the first place, or just a comedic live act worth a couple bucks to see? Nothing on Hated provides a definitive answer to any of these questions, but the debate over each point of view is riveting.

Clouding up the story further is the bonus footage contained on this DVD edition of
Hated--tape of GG's last performance, as well as the aftermath that ensued once it was over. One of the great travesties of GG Allin's life is that, for a great number of people, the spectacle of his performances overshadow the fact this guy actually had some pretty good things going on musically. This footage serves as a reminder why that is unfortunately the case. Here, the actual concert lasts all of about two songs. Once that's over, some creepiness goes on between GG and a few hangers on. Then, when GG leaves the scene with his entourage, a good number of those from the audience follow them and riot down the streets of New York. He's finally able to escape the throng and that's it for GG--he died shortly after this footage was captured. This protion of the DVD was filmed in a way that gives it a vibe similar to watching an episode of Cops when an officer is engaged in a foot chase. It's fitting being framed this way, to say the least.

Perhaps that there's enough to still debate about in terms of
GG Allin eleven years after his death is proof of some importance his legacy holds. Maybe the only thing that's sure is Hated being more than worth watching. Musically, there are other GG videos that hold more substance, but nothing captures the tabloid quality of it all like this does. An unmitigated classic.
