Filthy Jim/Long Dong Silver--split 7"
Scarey Records   2005

Featuring gnarly Kansans Filthy Jim and Italy's rock n' groove assault force Long Dong Silver, this ocean hopping split union has a lot to offer. If your tastes run the gamut, there will be a wealth of goodness in this 7" for you. Save for a curve ball here and there, this record has a continuity to it that is very surprisingly Detroit flavored.

Filthy Jim kick things off with "Tied To The Needle." Beginning with a grooved doom intro, then morphing into MC5 leaning punked hard rock, this one sets a raucous stage for what's to come. "Teenage Witch" follows, with its hyper-boogie verses and Tyner-fied choruses. The lead guitar work is incendiary on both cuts and goes a long way toward turbo boosting songs already energized to the max.

Long Dong Silver introduce themselves with their rockingest effort "Junkie Cinderella." The MC5 influences of the first side are here as well, though a little more straightforwardly so in this song--very punk and rock n' roll, without any hard rock shading. That all changes on the disc closing "Spank My Ass," though. Palm muted verse runs and an extremely groovy set-up riff give this tune a metal edge that will probably appeal in some measure to "stoner rock" fans.

There are two potential fates for this
Filthy Jim/Long Dong Silver split. One, due to the diversity of styles referenced, nobody will be able to pigeonhole either band and the platter will fall between the cracks for it. Two, because of that non-conformity, people from all over the musical map will find something to like in this record and it will have legs for that fact. Do your part to steer things toward that second option and pick this up--superb stuff from both continents.
