Flowers In The Attic/Roma Delenda Est--split 7"
McCarthyism   2004

McCartyism Records has built a fine reputation by releasing some of the freshest takes on the D.C. hardcore sound heard in some time. While the bands on this split are both from Baltimore, Flowers In The Attic and Roma Delenda Est, that trend continues with this release. As usual, there is enough subtle variance between bands to prevent parody and ensure a quality, cativating listen.

Flowers In The Attic kick off side A with the best song of the entire split, "Nameless & Faceless." The track starts off totally enraged, steps down just a hair to cultivate a very epic feeling, ultimately slowing way down, getting very spare, and putting out a bit of a doomy vibe. In that final section, as frontwoman Rebecca repeats "eventually everyone crumbles in my eyes" over and over like a mantra, the goosebump factor soars. They finish out their side of the split with more good stuff on "I Hate New York," further driving home the point Flowers In The Attic are at their best on the sparer, epic feeling sections which augment their brand of hardcore.

Roma Delenda Est close out the split with their two tracks, "All Points West" and "Burn The Bodies And Spread The Ashes." This band is refreshing in that, while they play in a style that would have to be considered the standard form of ADD infected hardcore/grind hybridization, they don't employ the shrill, black metal styled scream of vocals found on many such efforts. Instead, Roma Delenda Est use a much more gruff and traditional sounding hardcore bellow, giving this material the sense of being firmly rooted in the face of these songs' umpteen changes. It's solid stuff and closes the split on a fine note.

Hopefully, both
Flowers In The Attic and Roma Delenda Est will get an opportunity for full-length releases sometime soon. If the tracks on this split are any indication, each camp should have great futures ahead of themselves. Until that time, this slab is very worth checking out.
