Earthride--s/t
Earth Brain Records   2000

While I love everything Motorhead does, it has always been the slower, mid-tempo numbers that really get me going (i.e. "
Just 'Cos You Got The Power" or "The Chase Is Better Than The Catch"). I've always thought it would be amazing if a band came along that could capture that energy. My prayers have been answered in the form of Earthride, who boast the talents of doom veterans Dave Sherman (Spirit Caravan) and Eric Little (ex-Internal Void).

Here, Dave shakes off his bass playing duties from
Spirit Caravan to provide vocals for the Earthride machine. After listening to this CD, you get the feeling it's almost a travesty Dave isn't singing all the time. His voice is awesome and sounds like Lemmy's in the way Steve Hennessey's voice sounds like Ozzy's; startlingly similar on the surface but strikingly original in its subtleties, making for a compelling listen.

People may get caught up in the
Spirit Caravan and Internal Void connections to this band but those ties become non-factors with guitarist Kyle Vansteinburg stealing the show. After all, it doesn't matter where you've been if you don't have the songs to back it up. Well, this guy's riffs are terriffic. In fact, the songs "Black" and "Weak End" are instant classics. Especially "Black," which is the best thing to happen to doom since the last Spirit Caravan release.

This
Earthride CD will definitely thrill fans of all the bands I've mentioned. However, it is important to recognize that this CD shouldn't be viewed as an appetizer before the next Spirit Caravan album. On the contrary, Earthride are a great entity unto themselves. These guys have got that magical chemistry many musicians are never fortunate enough to find. May the moto breath stallion roll on.
