The Drip/Hedgecreep--split 7"
Wrecked Em   2005

It has been said that opposites attract. In reality, this is only a winning proposition if the differences in each side of the equation are recognized, respected for what they are, and rolled with. So it goes for this split 7" between the Drip and Hedgecreep. You will be confronted with contrasting styles over the course of this listen and have to decide whether the diversity suits you or not.

The
Drip kick off side A with "Pills." Not surprisingly, considering the title, there's an ample measure of New York Dolls attitude in this cut. At the same time, a hair band-esque energy lies at the base of this rock cauldron, leaking in a pep and bounce normally absent from similar grooves. The Drip close their portion of this platter with a cover of the Victims' "Annette"--a fitting choice, as the tune's anthemic nature fits well with the band's general vibe; punk rock n' roll being made by folks more likely to have a Poison record in their collection than one by Poison 13.

Closing this split on the B-side are
Hedgecreep with their song "Pokey." A far cry from what the Drip pour on you, this cut lumbers and lurches like Black Sabbath, with subtle flourishes of the Butthole Surfers and Jesus Lizard interwoven to knock you for a loop. The only kind of tie you'll find to the punk rock n' roll of the flip is in the opening bassline's similarity to the vocal melody of "Jealousy" off Iggy Pop's American Caesar album.

Ultimately, both the
Drip and Hedgecreep deliver solid songs and performances. That said, if you feel splits need a sense of continuity to be successful, this may not be the disc for you. On the other hand, those with broader tastes are in for a potentially sweet treat with this platter. Sure seems a shame to miss out over some silly stylistic hang-ups. Keep that mind open.
