Digital Leather--The Death Of Real
Discos Cagados   2002

The synth-driven sounds of new wave certainly seem to have come into vogue again, during recent times. When this style is done right, the results can be downright magical. With The Death Of RealDigital Leather have pulled some of that good synth-ified mojo from their proverbial hat. This is music which truly resonates.

Digital Leather do a fantastic job at cultivating a very vintage sounding early 80's new wave feel for their music. For point of comparison, you could say Digital Leather combine the epic melodicism of New Order and Joy Division with the strangely passionate plasticity of Gary Numan's best work. The Numan-isms come in large part from the fact this music is played entirely on synths--no guitars are used, period.

The songwriting on
The Death Of Real is nothing short of astounding. In terms of sheer melodic perfection, "Styrafoam," "A Stillife," and "Modulated/Simulated" would have to be considered standouts. If these songs were released 20 years prior, radio would've played them into the ground. There are also songs here like "I Hate Cars" which are very obviously punk in spite of the means by which they're presented. It should also be noted that fans of the Lost Sounds demos albums will find great joy in cuts such as "Do You Wanna."

Digital Leather's The Death Of Real is sure to kick your ass and do so to a danceable beat. In terms of synth pop action, this is top shelf, all the way. Though this music draws heavily from past sounds, it's as vital as can be. More than worth your time.
