Death Row--Death Is Alive 81-85
Game Two   2000

The year 2000 was particularly kind to fans of
Pentagram, with the release of both the Bedemon CD and this album, "Death Is Alive 81-85." Chronicling the "middle" part of the band's existence, when they dropped the Pentagram moniker in favor of Death Row, this collection of live tracks proves the kings of doom delivered in live settings just as well as they did in the studio.

All of these tracks appeared in studio form on the first three
Pentagram albums. That being said, it is impossible to pinpoint singular standout tracks, as every song is an absolute classic. Take your pick; from top to bottom, every song is flawless.

It should be noted that the material which appeared on the
"Be Forewarned" album receives a major boost from these live performances. The studio versions too often included harmony background vocals which dulled the edge you were expecting from these guys. Not a problem here, as Bobby's voice stands alone, unaccompanied, as it should be. He is one of the greatest vocalists in metal and doesn't need his voice dressed up with anything in the background. Particularly benefiting from this straightforward delivery is "Live Free And Burn" which, in this live rendition, is on par with anything from the Relentless era.

The tightness of the band is astounding in these performances. They are a well-oiled machine from front to back. There isn't a gear missed or stone left unturned. Everything is right in place, with Victor Griffin's guitar work being especially fierce. It truly is a blessing this document has been preserved. Does it get any better than this? Not very likely, I'd say.
