Demolition Doll Rods--On
Swami   2004

It seems like everyone wants to be a politician, these days. This is especially bad news for rock n' roll, because such campaigning is an almost certain death knell to the fun music inspires. Mercifully, the Demolition Doll Rods are back after a too long layoff to save us all with their new album On. You couldn't hope for better ambassadors to the party--and you better believe this is a party.

In a lot of ways,
On is the next logical progression for the Demolition Doll Rods, album-wise. Ultimately, it combines the rawness of their first album, Tasty, with the increased sense of tightness exhibited on TLA. Still, they haven't lost their charming, just-right quotient of slop with On. On the contrary, it seems the Demolition Doll Rods are keenly aware they had things virtually perfect right from their start, and wisely haven't tweaked their sound or style much, if at all. This is still the most fun rock n' roll party the world has ever known.

True to form,
On is all killer and no filler, in the songwriting department. Here, the standouts are obvious instant Demolition Doll Rods classics. First, "Born Wild" which comes off as the band's ultimate mission statement. Also, "All the Stars," with its opening couplet "you make my skirt rise/you make my lips glide" resonating perfectly with the primal, sexual energy of the music itself. Likewise, "Fat Pussy" turns out to be everything you'd expect and hope for--perhaps the "Maverick Girl" of On.

Needless to say, five years was way too damn long a wait for a new
Demolition Doll Rods album. On definitely proves to be worth the wait, though. This is a refreshing deep breath, in increasingly uptight times. So ladies, to quote the late Bon Scott, "take off your high heels/let down your hair." On second thought, you can leave those heels on--this is one deliciously naughty romp. Coming from these folks, it couldn't really be any other way--thank God for that.
