Carrion--The Crime Of Idle Hands
McCarthyism   2003

After their McCarthyism 7" awhile back, the prospect of a Carrion full-length became very exciting. That release was one of the most startling debuts in awhile and really left the listener craving more. Thankfully, the band's full-length platter is finally here in the form of The Crime Of Idle Hands. It certainly doesn't disappoint.

On that previous 7",
Carrion crafted a brand of heaviness which came off like a cross between Neurosis and Fugazi, with just a pinch of High On Fire. Thanks to a beefier sound on The Crime Of Idle Hands, the vibe has shifted slightly--now sounding somewhere between Neurosis and High On Fire, though leaning towards the Neurosis end due to dynamic variety and the hardcore roots of the material. As in the past, this isn't doom metal but should still appeal to fans of that genre.

Carrion comes through in a big way from a songwritng standpoint on The Crime Of Idle Hands. The band is certainly at its best here the more dynamic they get, standouts being "Worship," as well as "Gongs of Violence" with its subdued outtro section. Carrion also sheds further light on their influences during the songs "Window Out Of Solitude" and "Without Pity," each featuring riffs reminiscent of Metallica tunes--"Nothing Else Matters" and "One," respectively.

With
The Curse Of Idle Hands, Carrion have certainly cemented their spot as one of the most compelling bands going today. If you are a fan of any the aforementioned bands or styles, this is for you. Another great effort from this outfit. Definitely worthy of support.
