Born Bavarian--Crazy Hog
Devils Shitburner   2001

Antiseen have proven to be hugely influential over the years, their music spawning hundreds of bands. Amongst the best of their disciples is Born Bavarian. On Crazy Hog, the German scum squad prove they're a force to be reckoned with, boasting a familiar sound they make all their own.

There's definitely a lot of
Antiseen worship going on with Born Bavarian. That said, the fact this is some German dudes' approximation of that Southern fried agression makes for an interesting sound. While this isn't the authentic article, Crazy Hog is a winner thanks to the unique flavor the band brings to their scum punk. Unlike their heroes, Born Bavarian tend to keep their tunes at midtempo, instead of hyperspeed. This allows a catchiness bordering on pop sensibility to bubble underneath the abrasive surface of these songs--it's kind of like something a notch or two past Antiseen's most accessible album, Here To Ruin Your Groove, in this regard.

Born Bavarian really come through with great songwriting on Crazy Hog, too. The band come closest to sounding like Antiseen on tracks such as "Fuck The Scene" and "Pull The Trigger," as well as on their superb cover of Johnny Paycheck's "Armed And Crazy." "Stand In A Line" and "Hate Hate Hate" see Born Bavarian dropping hook-laden tunes that might appeal to fans of a mainstream band such as Rancid. Still, the rambling riff of "Tuned Very High" gives it the perfect edge, making it the best and most balanced song off Crazy Hog.

Born Bavarian prove to be worthy contenders in this realm of punk rock. More than just another faceless clone, these guys have their own identity and niche, making them a cut above the rest. For fans of the aforementioned style, Crazy Hog is a must own. Very good stuff, indeed.
