When you think of the Coffin Cheaters, overpowering and supercharged metallic scumpunk is the first thing that springs to mind. On this ...We're The Coffin Cheaters And We Are God EP, the results are much more on the side of pure rock n' roll than they are metalized. It's not an abrupt departure from what the band normally does--more like a righteous variation on that same well-conceived and executed theme.
The disc christening "I'm Gonna Kill You Fuckers" sets the tone for the rest of this platter, with its Nashville Pussy-via-Mentors bully tactics. "Play Some Skynyrd, Man" employs subtle time signature shifts to keep things fresh for the listener. Closing the introductory half of this 7" is "Trailer Trash Mama" which sees the Coffin Cheaters mustering more swagger than at any point on their other releases--very cool and a true highlight.
The epic blister of "I Wanna Fuck Your Shit" gets things back to a brisk pace for the start of side-B. "Crankin' In The Porno Booth" finds the Coffin Cheaters channeling the sinister energy of psychobilly's best without actually slipping into that form. "I Gotta Roll" manages to cull a somewhat Bootleg Bill-esque vibe, while the ramblin'-on-the-verge-of-falling-apart "Barnyard Betty" puts a very appropriate exclamation point on the entire listen.
Bottom line: if you prefer your punk with a very pronounced rock n' roll consiousness, ...We're The Coffin Cheaters And We Are God is the best Coffin Cheaters release for you. It's still highly recommended you check out their devastating Porno Serial Killers CD, as well--it's not so different it would be a chore for it to click with you. Still, this release is another example of the subtle differences between each of the Coffin Cheaters offerings. Worth a spin, from any angle.
