Carrion--"Beggar" b/w "Witness Your Birth"
McCarthyism   2002

Discovering cool new bands is always great, especially when you aren't expecting it. Enter Carrion and their new 7". This release proves there are still exciting sounds to be found in the underground. It also shows sometimes a label's target demographic for a band can be a bit off.

This 7" kicks off with the first song,
"Beggar," which reveals the Carrion sound. What's going on here is a nice blend of Neurosis and Fugazi--it's definitely metal but with a jazzy hardcore edge which belies Carrion's D.C. roots. "Beggar" leans more toward the Fugazi end of the spectrum, with several well thought out time signature shifts. The writing is strong and there is always a sense of song over jam.

The flipside,
"Witness Your Birth," shows Carrion focusing more on the Neurosis-esque aspect of their sound. However, about halfway through the song, the tempo slows down creating a section that sounds somewhat similar to the grooved doom stylings of High On Fire. Any way you slice it, "Witness Your Birth" is a massive slab of heaviness and a great note to end this release on.

If this 7" is any indication,
Carrion are a band worth keeping an eye on. The only thing that may hurt them in the long and short run is the fact they're being marketed as a "stoner rock" band, which they aren't--unless the guys in the band are actual stoners; they could only possibly fit that bill in such a literal sense. No, Carrion are not part of the plague of uninspired Fu Manchu and Kyuss imitators. Mercifully, they're a powerhouse of a band with a fantastic snese of dynamics and certainly worth a listen.
