Bible Of The Devil/The Last Vegas--split 7"
Scarey Records   2004

In today's musical landscape, it's nearly impossible to fathom there was a time hard rock ruled the world. For those of us there to verify such a time actually did exist, watching the hard rock form devolve into a lost art has been quite painful. However, every once in awhile a release like this Bible Of The Devil/The Last Vegas split comes along to give you hope big guitars will persevere. These two bands serve up the riff better than you'll get it anywhere else, at the moment.

Bible Of The Devil kick off side A with the riffalicious "Humboldt Home." This cut benefits from its great harmony lead, as well as a break near midsong which takes things down nicely, switching up the track's pacing to grand effect. "Starstruck" finishes off Bible Of The Devil's half of this split on a very vintage-tinted note. Possessing a structure and feel not unlike the KISS classic "100,000 Years," this one may be the pinnacle of recently issued quality hard rock. An absolutely devastating listen.

The Last Vegas follow on the B-side in similar suit, first with "You Wanna Know How To Love Me." Adding a pinch of gutter glam to the equation, faintly recalling D*Generation's rawest moments, this song's swaggerin' shuffle proves too much to resist. Closing this platter on a true high, The Last Vegas dish out "S&M." Slide-infused and nasty as all get out, here the band manage to meld the darkest portions of vintage AC/DC, KISS, and Aerosmith to create what should be an arena crushing monster.

While both
Bible Of The Devil and The Last Vegas put out a strong throwback vibe, modern firepower really drives this 7" over the top. Still, this split showcases an incredible sense of roots hard rock hasn't seen in a long time and that is at the heart of why these songs prove so successful and endearing. If this style of music will always occupy a special place in your heart, add this to your essential scores list. Great from top to bottom.
