The Botched Suicides--Hate Or Die
self-released   2004

One unfortunate truth of the scumpunk form is that its lyrical negativity often proves too much for many listeners to get around. That said, the best bands operating in this style tend to be so overpowering musically, the listen they serve up becomes all but undeniable. The Botched Suicides are one such band, with that bulldozing sense of will. Their album Hate Or Die is one of the better recent entries this genre has been able to boast.

Stylistically, the
Botched Suicides have very obiously constructed the bulk of their playbook based on the legendary GG Allin/ANTiSEEN Murder Junkies collaboration. Hate Or Die is a scathing collection of mean-assed scumpunk with a densely heavy metallic edge. Vocalist Goldberg has a GG-meets-Dee Dee type delivery that's uniquely familiar in feel. Steph Suicide's drumming is very loose and has room for growth, though her efforts do provide this disc a nice slop quotient which compliments the music well. That jaggedness is of little consequence, though, as the guitar work on this album is so dead on it'd take a tremendous slip to throw everything else completely off course.

From a songwriting standpoint,
Hate Or Die proves equally as impressive. "Chatroom Rapist" serves as a perfect opener, memorable in every way it possibly could be. Still, the album's highlight proves to be its title track. This one feels at the very least like a minor classic of the scumpunk form, with an "it" factor almost off the scale. Three unlisted bonus tracks close this platter on a cool note, a "live" production and rawer vocal delivery most effectively driving the band's GG-isms home.

If you're a diehard fan of this style, you absolutely need a copy of
Hate Or Die. Should this kind of stuff generally not be your cup of tea, please note that the Botched Suicides serve up things here so punishing musically it might also warrant a spin or two from you, as well. Solid songwriting and an overall well-balanced feel make this one more than wothwhile. Give it a shot.
